Reverse Description

Abstract horse facing right. The helmeted rider floats above the horse. It says AYΔΩΔEON (Audoleaon) above the horse and TOΣ (TOS) in front of the horse, which means “belonging to Audoleon”. Just below the horse is a triskeles countermark which appears on most coins of this type. A pellet sits between the forelegs.

Lanz

Lanz 706. Audoleon Type (This coin)

The Audoleon Type tetradrachm is the first of the Puppenreiter (Puppet Rider) series. This is a series of coins produced by the Pannonian Celts where the rider floats leglessly above the horse. These were initially derived from a tetradrachm of Philip II and coins from the Paeonian king Audoleon. Most of the coin is copied from the Phillip II tetradrachm, but the legend is taken from Audoleon’s coin.

The rider floats above the horse. It says AYΔΩΔEON (Audoleaon) above the horse and TOΣ (TOS) in front of the horse, which means “belonging to Audoleon”. There’s a triskeles countermark just below the horse which appears on most coins of this type. I have no idea how rare this type is, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was Very Common (more than 200 coins).
